LEARNING STRATEGIES
Strategies to achieve each of the goals include:
Goal 1: Help each child gain the knowledge and academic skills needed to set and achieve personal goals necessary for success in learning.
- Develop and meet individual educational goals
- Provide individualized education
- Improve reading and comprehension skills
- Promote a joy in reading as a life-long activity
- Learn how to write and what to write
- Improve mathematics knowledge and skills
- Learn and practice problem solving skills
- Learn and practice concentration and focus
- Understand their style of learning
- Develop and practice social skills in a variety of settings
- Learn and practice self-discipline
Goal 2: Integrate educational programs and activities with treatment to turn character development, personal growth and emotional and behavioral management knowledge and skills into academic success.
- Build self-esteem and self-confidence through academic and social achievement
- Use emotional and behavioral management goals in the classroom
- Provide character development opportunities in a multitude of venues and situations
- Apply academic rules and behavioral expectations consistently
- Provide conceptual freedom while developing and practicing acceptable behaviors and socialization skills
- Provide learning at the child’s pace with appropriate performance pressures and reduced anxiety
- Enhance and practice expression of all types
- Build success on each child’s strengths by taking small incremental steps, recognizing at every stage progress being made
Goal 3: Instill in each child the sense of the enjoyment that comes from learning.
- Provide children choices in learning areas and the development of their personal education plans
- Encourage children to develop ownership of the process and content of their academic work
- Provide self-directed learning and the support of involved and excited adults
- Build in success for each child, failure is not fun for anyone
- Provide multiple learning methods and opportunities, including experiential hands on learning approaches
- Use creative and innovative projects to instill and excitement for learning
- Provide positive reinforcements and incentives
- Teach how to value mistakes as opportunities to learn
