Position Title: Direct Care Staff/Educational Assistant

Duties Under Prescribed Policy and Procedure:

  • Participate in all aspects of the therapeutic treatment of children with severe multiple psychiatric, emotional, behavioral, and/or developmental concerns.
  • Provide constant supervision of children either while on the unit, within the school, or while in the community. Adhere to special supervisional requirements as indicated and directed by clinical and supervisory staff.
  • Observe, and interpret student behaviors, communicating observations both verbally and in the child's record with co-workers, supervisors, and clinical staff. Written observations will be completed on each shift based on the individual child's behaviors, problem list, and treatment needs.
  • Participate in the maintenance of a safe and secure environment for children through management of behavior consistent with facility rules, following of individualized treatment and education plans, and an understanding of each child's history as provided in the charts/records. Staff shall provide direction, support, and encouragement to all Pendleton Academies students.
  • Dispense and maintain records of medications under supervision of medical staff.
  • Fully participate and complete training in the application of Professional Assault-Response Training, (PART or PRO-ACT) and must be physically able to do so. Other required trainings paid for by Pendleton Academies include CPR, First Aid, and Blood Borne Pathogens to help insure safety of all children.
  • Transport and provide adequate supervision of clients within the community when involved in leisure, recreational, medical, educational, or other activities.
  • Assure that the facility and grounds are kept clean and tidy.
  • Supervise, prepare, and/or serve meals, as well as maintain food service records.
  • Instruct and supervise children in personal hygiene, group living skills, the maintenance of a clean facility, and other skills needed to live successfully both in the therapeutic dorm milieu, and in the community host homes.
  • Follows all policies and procedures of Pendleton Academies.

Job Duties Specific to the Educational Program:
    Read and interpret lesson plans with teacher assistance; explain instruction individually to students and monitor student responses to determine each child's ability and understanding of lesson concepts.

Teamwork:

  • Direct Care Staff are to work as part of the Agency Treatment Team. Teamwork is necessary for successful treatment and education of all children at Pendleton Academies.
  • Direct Care Staff are to communicate both verbally and in written form, behavioral observations and interpretations to clinical, management, education and support staff. Direct Care Staff can expect support, assistance, knowledge, and responsiveness in return.
  • Care Staff are expected to participate in treatment team meetings or complete reports as requested to share information.
  • Care Staff are expected to attend both department and agency staff meetings as scheduled.
  • Care Staff should attend trainings offered by clinical, contractual, and managerial staff. Direct Care Staff can expect training opportunities and regularly scheduled staff meetings.
  • Care Staff are to be ready to assume responsibility when their shift begins. Staff unable to attend the assigned shift shall report to their supervisor as arranged before shift.
  • Care Staff have shift specific duties, but may be asked to complete non-shift specific responsibilities. Staff shall be trained to complete all duties of Care Workers.

Qualifications:

  • Valid Oregon Driver's License
  • H.S. or GED, required (advanced degree preferred).
  • Previous experience in an adolescent treatment setting desired.
  • Able to physically assist, under prescribed procedures, in the controlling of adolescents that are a danger to themselves or others, and able to physically participate in recreational and leisure activities with adolescents.
  • Bilingual/Bicultural desirable
  • Knowledge of Macintosh computer systems desirable.
  • Must pass criminal history and background checks and be able to work without supervision under State Office of Mental Health Services rules.

Schedule: The facility is open twenty-four hours per day, seven days a week, with educational services provided from 8 am to 2 pm, Monday through Friday. The work is divided between day, swing, educational hours, and night shifts.

Probationary Period: Staff must complete a three-month probationary period including completion of the PRO-ACT training.
