Therapy | Education and Training | Cultural Activities
Children come to us from different cultures, with traditions and perspectives that are meaningful to them and affect who they are as people. We don’t just accept these differences—we embrace them.
We strive to employ professionals, support staff and Children’s Theraputic Families from diverse cultures and backgrounds that reflect the cultures of the children we serve. We also develop programs and curriculum that reflect the values and practices of the children’s cultures.
The services we offer Native American children are an example of our outlook. One-third of the children we serve are Native American, so in our treatment strategies for these children we include traditional story telling, crafts, heritage appreciation, spiritual practices, education and honoring of cultural values. Prayer and discussion sessions are held three mornings a week in our tipi before the start of the school day; and a sweat lodge—Native American Purification Lodge Ceremony—is conducted by a Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation elder twice a month.
Participation in these and other cultural ceremonies is voluntary and open to all children and staff.
