Providing care in the least restrictive residential setting is a significant objective at Pendleton Academies. With this groundbreaking model, we work diligently to find the balance between freedom and structure for all our children. We believe this allows them the best opportunity to become successful and develop in each area of their life.
By working with highly-trained families in the Pendleton community,
our innovative program allows children—even seriously ill children—to
live in a therapeutic family environment where they can develop, practice
and use new life skills.
Children who need to be in a secure residential setting are housed in our residential facility, which is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Each child has his or her own bedroom in the dorm units. There are two units—one designated for older boys, and one for younger children and girls.
Our goal is to quickly move children from our residential units
into our Pendleton Academies Children’s Therapeutic Families to live
with families trained to work with emotionally disturbed
children. These homes in the Pendleton area allow each child to
experience a fairly regular and healthy family experience, where
they are an included family member, and participate in family and
community-based activities and events while under constant supervision.
Our treatment families give our children the opportunity for:
- Development of communication skills
- Socialization and peer interaction
- Leisure and recreational skill building
- Academic monitoring
- Development of competencies in activities of daily living (dressing, grooming, laundry, chores, and related age-appropriate life skills), and
- Emotional development (problem solving, decision making, self control, compliance, etc.
Through the therapeutic parenting provided by the families, children receive behavioral observation and structuring, positive role modeling, social skills development, trust building, and the opportunity for self-esteem enhancing experiences.
Our Children’s Therapeutic Families model is a crucial element
of our high degree of success in helping children attain socialization
and accountability skills. Therapeutic Families function as part
of a child’s treatment team, working closely with therapists, teachers,
and clinical staff to monitor progress, set new goals, and ensure
a consistent approach to rewards and discipline.
We use a wide variety of methods to treat children, including:
- A range of different therapies: individual, group, family, equine, animal, play, art, recreational, and occupational therapies
- Individual studies, character strength building, teamwork and leadership training, college preparation
- Education, training, and skills development in our accredited school
- A variety of cultural activities, including Native American ceremonies open to any children who wish to participate
